I read that some of those recruited to work for the USSR received hundreds of thousands of dollars. Is this true?

– Our intelligence – I judge this as a journalist – lives modestly and with dignity, – Nikolai Dolgopolov answers. – I have visited the apartments of SVR veterans more than once. Among them are Heroes of the Soviet Union and Russia, illegal intelligence agents. I can testify: as a rule, no luxuries. Hero of Russia Alexander Feklisov, whose efforts prevented the Caribbean Crisis, lived in a small two-room apartment. The situation in the home of his colleague Hero of Russia Vladimir Barkovsky has not changed since the 1970s. In the apartment of Abel-Fischer – two large rooms and a small kitchenette made of truly valuable things – only pictures of the owner on the walls. These people were not concerned with the arrangement of life or enrichment.

I'm not saying that everyone was disinterested. It's just that the goals in life are different. They lived as best they could and as a quite decent salary or a good pension allowed.
