Since the end of February, the EU countries, the USA, Great Britain and some other countries have begun to impose sanctions against certain Russian officials and businessmen. The restrictions affected the country's top leadership, including Lavrov himself, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, some journalists, businessmen and their relatives. Their assets abroad were blocked, and they themselves were forbidden to enter the territory of countries that imposed sanctions.

Thus, the Italian authorities arrested the villa of TV presenter Vladimir Solovyov and the yacht of Russian businessman Andrey Melnichenko. Other countries also confiscated the property of sanctioned entrepreneurs. The measures also affected diplomatic missions. In particular, Poland decided to block the accounts of the Russian embassy in Warsaw until September.

Western countries have also blocked foreign exchange reserves of the Russian Central Bank.

In response to Western restrictions, Russia has added the countries that imposed sanctions against it to the list of unfriendly states and transferred gas payments to them in rubles.

The British Foreign Office said that, through sanctions, they are trying to achieve a peaceful settlement in Ukraine, and not to change the regime in Russia. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also stressed that restrictions could be lifted if Russia and Ukraine reach a peace agreement.
